Water Wells
Well Drilling/Well Repair
A permit is required to drill or repair a well in Boone County. Applicants may pick up an application from the health department or download a copy of the permit application below. Note: The documents are created in Adobe Acrobat and are best viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 or above. In order to obtain the latest Adobe Reader software please go to www.adobe.com.)
All well drillers must be registered with the Department of Natural Resources and the Boone County Health Department. A list of registered well drillers and their phone numbers is available at the health department, or you may review the list of registered well drillers below.
Water Testing
Once the well is drilled, the water must be tested for bacteria before being released for use to ensure a safe drinking water supply. For new wells on new home construction sites, the owner or agent may use any Indiana State Board of Health certified lab. A complete list of certified labs is available online or at the health department. Bottles for HML labs and Delta Water Management Group are available for pick up at the health department. Call the office for details.
Note: Wells drilled on existing home sites and repaired wells also require testing.
Water samples occasionally return unsatisfactory and may require additional disinfecting. Well chlorinating procedures may be previewed here and are also available at the health department.
If you have further questions, please call a well driller or the Boone County Health Department.
Well Abandonment
Proper well abandonment is an important component in groundwater protection practices and is equally important in the prevention of potential safety hazards. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) promulgated Rule 312 IAC 13-10-2 to provide guidance to the public in dealing with unused wells and proper abandonment. Please call DNR, or the Health Department if you have any questions about proper well abandonment.
