Adult Protective Services
Adult Protective Services (APS) is a program that receives and investigates reports regarding adults within the state of Indiana who may be endangered, and as appropriate, will coordinate a proper response to protect the endangered adults who are the victims of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
APS does this through enforcing state laws designed to protect endangered adults from those who would victimize them and from self-neglect. The Central Indiana APS division (Unit 8) collaborates closely with the prosecutor’s offices in Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, and Marion counties to investigate complaints.
Who is an endangered adult?
There are three aspects to being an endangered adult in Indiana:
- An individual who is at least 18 years of age; and
- Incapable by reason of mental illness, intellectual disability, dementia, habitual drunkenness, excessive drug use, or other physical or mental incapacity, of managing or directing the management of the individual’s property or providing self-care; and
- Harmed or threatened with harm because of:
- Neglect
- Battery; or
- Exploitation of the individual’s personal services or property.
Reporting
If you suspect any adult (family member, friend, neighbor, client, employee) of being abused, neglected, or exploited please contact APS Unit 8 at 317-327-1403, the State Hotline by dialing 211, or make an online report.
Indiana is a mandatory reporting state. Everyone is required by law to report suspected neglect, abuse or exploitation of an endangered adult to an APS unit or law enforcement. All reports are secure and kept confidential.
Do not make excuses or look the other way. Your phone call might very well save someone’s life.
