Flood Preparedness
As little as six inches of fast moving water can knock you off your feet and a depth of two feet will float your car! Never try to walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Stop, turn around and go another way.
Flood/Flash Flood Watches
A Flood/Flash Flood Watch is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of floods or flash floods in and close to the watch area. Their size can vary depending on the weather situation.
Flood/Flash Flood Warnings
A Flood/Flash Flood Warning is issued by the National Weather Service when flooding or flash flooding has been reported or is imminent in the warning area. Take immediate action.
Before A Flood/Flash Flood Strikes
- Learn about the flood and flash flood history and risk where you live.
- Develop a Family Disaster Plan
Include plans for evacuation for floods with some advanced warning and flash floods with little or no warning. - Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit
- Monitor NOAA Weather Radio
- Contact your insurance agent (most homeowner’s policies do not cover flooding)
During a Flood/Flash Flood Watch
- Listen to radio and television newscasts for the latest information and instructions. Listen to NOAA weather radio
- Watch water levels and begin making plans for evacuation.
During a Flood/Flash Flood Warning
- Stay Informed listen to radio and television for the latest information
- Head for higher ground and stay out of flood water
- Evacuate if instructed by authorities
- Monitor County Travel Advisory Map for restrictions
- Practice Electrical Safety don’t go into a basement or any room if water covers the electrical outlets or if cords are submerged.
- Never walk through moving water. As little as six inches of fast moving water can knock you off your feet.
- Do not drive through flooded areas. A depth of two feet can move a vehicle off the road.
After a Flood/Flash Flood
- Stay out of flooded buildings
- Avoid contact with floodwater
- Avoid disaster areas
- Heed Closed and Cautionary Signs
