Disaster Supplies Kit

One way to prepare ahead of time for a disaster is to assemble a family disaster supplies kit. Being prepared means having your own food, water and supplies to last for at least 72 hours. This list should contain six basics – water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and special items. Consider two kits.  In one put everything you will need to stay where you are or shelter in place in a large covered trash can, bucket or plastic tote.  The other should be an easy to carry smaller container you can take with you during an evacuation like a camping backpack or duffel bag.

Make the kit your own and include enough supplies for all household members including pets.

Store your kit in a convenient and secure place known to all.  Keep the contents in air-tight plastic bags placed in a duffle bag or plastic tote. Stored water and food should be rotated every six months. Reevaluate your kit and needs at least once a year and replace batteries, update clothing, etc.

Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Kit:

  • Water one gallon per person per day for a minimum of 3 days.
  • Food at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.  Don’t forget a can opener.
  • Battery-powered radio and extra batteries
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Work gloves
  • Filter mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
  • Moist towelettes for sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Plastic Sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Unique family needs such as daily prescription medications, infant formula/diapers and important family documents
