Water and sewer project expected to begin in Thorntown

THORNTOWN, Ind. (May 18, 2022) — A $2 million water and sewer project in the northwestern Boone County community of Thorntown is expected to begin soon.

The project is being paid for by the millions of dollars the county recently received from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Thorntown Utility Superintendent Gary Moody said a new 2.5 acre wastewater lagoon will be constructed next to the current lagoon to increase capacity by 33 percent. He also said a new SAGR system will be installed to meet ammonia limits. The project will also focus on upgrades to diffusers, piping, and the installation of six control valves.

Thorntown has been under a ban for any new sewer hookups because the treatment plant has been at capacity, according to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Those capacity restrictions have also curtailed any housing development in the area. Once upgrades are completed, new sewer hookups will be allowed to resume.

The Boone County Commissioners believe the improvements to Thorntown’s water and sewage facilities will help the county as a whole in terms of further economic development.

“The Thorntown water project represents the perfect fit for our county’s utilization of ARPA funds which will greatly benefit the community’s long term rates with enhanced and updated technology,” said Boone County Commissioner Tom Santelli. “This project is the result of great people collaboratively working together to generate the best possible outcomes for Thorntown. I’m looking forward to these improvements.”

The project is expected to be completed by the end of July.
