LEBANON, IN March 3, 2025 – Boone County Commissioners have quashed a proposed fueling station project, saving nearly two million dollars in the process.
In a 2-1 vote during this morning’s meeting, the Commissioners canceled the project which proposed late last year and would have been located at the new Boone County Jail. Proponents had claimed the $1.9 million fueling station for county-owned vehicles would save approximately $130,000 a year in fuel costs, which would pay off the bond financing for the project in approximately 15 years.
Instead, a more recent analysis of all fuel and project costs by the current commission showed potential fuel savings of about $25,000 per year. When the construction and annual maintenance costs are considered, it would take over 100 years for Boone County to pay for the project with the cost savings.
“I haven’t liked this project from the start,” Commission President Scott Pell said. “The numbers aren’t in our favor, and I’m not willing to take on a debt to ‘save money,’ especially when it will take a century to recover, if ever,” Pell noted.
