Boone County Courthouse Server Incident Update

On Friday night, October 11, a severe power surge impacted multiple systems at the Boone County Courthouse which we believe was caused by a vehicular accident that affected a transformer. The powerful surge overwhelmed the Courthouse’s battery backup units, leading to a complete shutdown of all servers and core network equipment, despite having safeguards in place.

The Boone County IT team responded immediately and continues to work on restoring full operations. We want to reassure the public that this incident is not a security breach. No personal or confidential information has been accessed or compromised. Importantly, no general election data has been affected by this event, as all election-related data resides on separate, unaffected servers.

The BCSO staff was unaffected, as their data is stored on a separate server. Furthermore, no other applications were impacted, as they are housed on independent servers as well.

The power surge was so large that it bypassed all four backup systems and surge protectors. While multiple safety measures were in place, the intensity of the surge caused these hardware failures.

“The Commissioners appreciate the diligent efforts of the IT department, which is working tirelessly to bring the affected server back online as quickly as possible,” Commissioner Jeff Wolfe reiterated. “This incident was a hardware failure, not a software issue, and we can confirm it was not a data breach.”
