On November 10, 2016 the historic Creek Road bridge over Sugar Creek (Boone County Bridge #32) was severely damaged when a piece of farm machinery crossed the structure and hit portions of the metal truss. Engineers visited the site and deemed it unsafe for vehicle or pedestrian use and recommended immediate closure. Therefore, the bridge was closed and will remain closed indefinitely.
Prior to the machinery striking the bridge, the Boone County Highway Department had repaired the bridge, spending over $400,000 to rehabilitate the structure. The need for bridge repairs across the county continues to increase and funding is extremely limited. Any additional County expenditure on this structure results in less funding for other much-needed bridge repairs that were not caused by negligent drivers.
However, the historic structure has become a favorite of many Boone County residents and they want to see the bridge restored to its original condition. A group of active residents has worked with the Community Foundation (CFBC) to develop a preservation fund to raise money to assist the Boone County Highway in repairing the structure.
